Shopify Chargeback Fee 2026: $15 (Stripe Backend) + Shop Pay Protect

Shopify Payments uses Stripe as the underlying processor: $15 per dispute, refunded on win. The advantage is integration: disputes appear directly in the Shopify admin, and Shop Pay orders can qualify for Shopify Protect, which covers eligible fraud chargebacks at no merchant cost.

The $15 fee and the Stripe backend

Shopify Payments is built on Stripe Connect. When a dispute hits a Shopify Payments transaction, it flows through Stripe's dispute infrastructure and out to the card network. Shopify abstracts the merchant interaction (you see the dispute in the Shopify admin, not the Stripe dashboard) but the underlying pricing inherits from Stripe.

Shopify Protect: free fraud coverage on Shop Pay

Shopify Protect (also branded Shop Pay Protect) is a fraud-chargeback indemnification program bundled into Shopify Payments at no additional cost. When an eligible Shop Pay order results in a fraud-coded chargeback under Visa 10.4 or Mastercard 4837, Shopify reimburses the merchant for both the disputed transaction amount and the $15 chargeback fee. Coverage is automatic; no separate enrollment or claim process.

Covered orders
  • Shop Pay checkouts (the one-tap accelerated checkout, not standard guest checkout)
  • Orders flagged as eligible by Shopify's fraud risk scoring at checkout
  • Fraud-coded chargebacks under Visa 10.4 or Mastercard 4837 reason codes
  • Orders within the eligibility window (typically 120 days from purchase)
  • Merchants on Shopify Payments (Shopify Protect is bundled into the platform; no separate signup)
Not covered
  • Non-Shop Pay checkouts (guest checkout, third-party wallets)
  • Orders flagged as high-risk at checkout (Shopify declines coverage upfront)
  • Non-fraud disputes (product not received, product not as described, recurring billing disputes)
  • Orders outside the eligibility window
  • Merchants not on Shopify Payments

Dispute admin walkthrough

Shopify integrates the dispute response flow into the standard order admin. The workflow has four steps, all surfaced inside the Shopify dashboard.

1. Dispute alert in Shopify admin

Dispute appears as a banner on the order page with the reason code, the disputed amount, and the response deadline. Shopify pulls the order metadata (line items, AVS, CVV, fulfilment status, tracking) into the dispute record automatically.

2. Evidence checklist

Shopify generates a reason-code-specific evidence checklist (delivery confirmation for product-not-received, refund policy for cancelled recurring, customer communications for product-quality). Standard order data auto-fills; merchant uploads supplementary evidence (screenshots, communications, photos).

3. Submit through Shopify

Shopify packages the evidence and submits through Stripe's representment pipeline to the card network. Submission is one-click; no Stripe-dashboard access required.

4. Decision (30 to 75 days)

Card issuer reviews and rules. Decision posts back to the Shopify admin. On win, disputed amount and $15 fee are credited back to the Shopify Payments balance. On loss, the disputed amount stays reversed; the $15 fee stays charged.

Real-money cost of a Shopify chargeback

The $15 fee is the visible number. Actual cost per lost dispute is higher because you also lose the product, the shipping, and the internal time. Example breakdown for a $80 physical-goods order at 40% COGS.

FAQ

How much does Shopify charge per chargeback?

$15 in the US, the same as the underlying Stripe processor. Refunded if you win the dispute. International rates vary by region.

What is Shop Pay Protect?

A fraud-chargeback indemnification program bundled into Shopify Payments. Covers eligible Shop Pay orders against fraud-coded chargebacks (Visa 10.4, Mastercard 4837) at no merchant cost. If a covered order is disputed for fraud, Shopify reimburses the disputed amount and the $15 fee.

What orders does Shopify Protect cover?

Shop Pay accelerated-checkout orders flagged as eligible at checkout (Shopify's fraud risk scoring determines eligibility). Does not cover guest checkout, third-party wallets, or orders flagged as high-risk. Non-fraud disputes are also not covered.

Is Shopify Payments cheaper than Stripe direct?

Same $15 base fee. Shopify Payments has not historically applied Stripe's $15 counter fee that launched in June 2025, so on contested disputes Shopify can be $15 cheaper. Review current Shopify Payments terms for the latest fee structure.

Where do I respond to Shopify chargebacks?

Directly in the Shopify admin. The dispute appears as a banner on the order page with the reason code, deadline, and a reason-code-specific evidence checklist. Shopify packages and submits the evidence through Stripe's representment pipeline.
